Antifoam additives for lubricants, including silicone-based formulations. Oil-soluble, they are used in mineral and synthetic formulations alike.

In a lubricant that circulates and is agitated, foam disturbs lubrication and cooling. Formulators of engine, gear and transmission oils use antifoam components to control foam and help release entrained air. These components are used in small proportion, and their compatibility with the rest of the additive system is checked.
