Antiwear and friction modifier additives to reduce wear or adjust friction. The variants serve different engine and industrial formulations.

When the oil film becomes thin between moving surfaces, an antiwear additive forms a protective layer, while a friction modifier tunes the friction wanted. Formulators of engine oils and industrial lubricants select the chemistry, dosage and compatibility for the base oil and application planned.
